Industry experts on Wednesday will face questioning from members of a Senate Homeland Security Committee panel about the national security risks posed by rogue artificial intelligence.
The hearing will focus on how autonomous AI agents — including OpenAI’s model that unsuccessfully attempted to breach federal agency websites — could be used to launch cyberattacks, target critical infrastructure or carry out other harmful actions with limited human oversight. The subcommittee is led by Sens. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) and Andy Kim (D-N.J.).
Concerns over rapidly advancing AI have grown in recent weeks, as industry leaders sound alarms about the lack of guardrails. President Trump, who on Tuesday ordered the federal government to begin referring to the tech as “superintelligence,” has resisted calls for sweeping federal regulations.
The president also welcomed several tech CEOs to the White House Tuesday, including Nvidia’s Jensen Huang, xAI’s Elon Musk and Anthropic’s Dario Amodei, to sign a voluntary accord aimed at establishing self-policing when it comes to the tech.
