Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced more than $225 million in new Head Start grants aimed at transforming federally funded preschool programs across the country.
Nearly $89 million will be dedicated to nutrition improvements, including kitchen upgrades, refrigeration for fresh ingredients and local farm-to-table programs. More than $135 million will support facility upgrades, HVAC repairs, transportation improvements and safety enhancements.
The administration also says proposed regulatory changes could reopen thousands of Head Start slots for families currently on waiting lists. Critics have raised concerns about the ongoing costs and logistics of providing more fresh foods once the initial grant funding expires.
