Loh Boon Chye Says Expansion in London and U.S. Has Led to Growth in Overnight Trading

John Lothian News interviewed Singapore Exchange CEO Loh Boon Chye over Zoom in Singapore after the FIA Boca-V conference. Boon Chye talked about SGX, its new products and marketing during the pandemic.

He said SGX’s expansion, including “boots on the ground” in the U.S., helped the exchange engage its clients, expanding SGX trading and creating more opportunities for SGX to promote its products.

He said the volume of overnight trading has gone up, reflecting growth from Western traders. The SGX strategy has been to widen and deepen their international presence, Boon Chye said.

He gave high marks to the FIA, its CEO, Walt Lukken, and his team for a high quality virtual conference experience with Boca-V. He said he hopes FIA-Asia will be live this year in Singapore. (It’s scheduled for November 30 through December 2.)

He also spoke about SGX’s own recent Singapore Trading Festival, which attracted over 10,000 registrants. It was probably one the largest online events for retail investors in Asia, Boon Chye said.

After opening offices in London and then the U.S., Boon Chye said the overnight session volume has “gone up significantly.”

SGX has been working to establish mutual connectivity into other markets in Asia. The exchange has also introduced ESG variations of its benchmark equity derivatives. And the exchange has launched 30 new equity futures products in the last year, he said.

Boon Chye glowed when discussing the successful migration of liquidity in equity derivatives to the FTSE Russell product suite and the expansion of ESG-related products.

He expanded on SGX’s recent partnerships in fixed-income trading and FX trading, noting that the acquisition of BidFX has given SGX expanded offerings in futures and OTC FX trading.

Boon Chye described what daily leverage certificates are and how investors can use them.

He talked about what the exchange will look like after the pandemic and noted that two trends that started before COVID-19 really expanded during the pandemic: sustainability and digitization.

Lastly, he said he enjoys being in nature and hopes when the pandemic is over he can return to traveling and his safari trips.
