Capitol Hill officer tells of racial slurs in riot

Four Capitol Hill officers gave emotional, occasionally angry, accounts to House investigators Tuesday of the January 6th insurrection.
All of the officers testified they were beaten and verbally abused as the mob of Trump’ supporters overwhelmed them, broke through windows and doors and interrupted the certification of Democrat Joe Biden’s presidential win.
“Until then, I had never seen anyone physically assault Capitol Police or MPD, let alone witnessed mass assaults being perpetrated on law enforcement officers, ” Capitol Police Sergeant Harry Dunn testified.
Dunn said one group of rioters, perhaps 20 people, screamed the n-word at him as he was trying to keep them from breaching the House chamber.
“One woman in a pink MAGA shirt yelled, ‘You hear that, guys, this nigger voted for Joe Biden,’ Dunn recounted. “Then the crowd, perhaps around 20 people joined in screaming, ‘boo fucking nigger.’ No one had ever, ever called me a nigger while wearing the uniform of a Capitol Police officer.”
Dunn said in the days that followed the attempted insurrection, other Black officers shared own stories of racial abuse.
The new committee is launching its probe with a focus on the law enforcement officers who protected them – an effort by the panel to put a human face on the violence of the day.
Tensions on Capitol Hill have only worsened since the insurrection, with many Republicans playing down, or outright denying, the violence that occurred and denouncing the Democratic-led investigation as politically motivated.
