The War Department recognizes National POW/MIA Recognition Day as Secretary of War Pete Hegseth and Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Dan Caine honor American service members who were held captive and those who remain missing from past conflicts.
Hegseth reflects on the sacrifices of America’s warfighters and reaffirms the commitment to recovering those who remain missing, telling service members and their families: “We will come for you no matter what and no matter how long it takes.”
National POW/MIA Recognition Day is observed annually on the third Friday of September. In 2026, the observance falls on September 18. The VA says approximately 80,000 Americans remain missing from past conflicts.
