Scientists have identified a new species of wild cat in Bolivia for the first time in more than a century.
Known as the Tilcayo tiger cat, Leopardus tilcayo is a small, spotted feline found in Bolivia’s Yungas forest. The cat is smaller than an average house cat and has distinctive leopard-like markings.
Researchers used genetic analysis to confirm that the animal represents a distinct species, with its lineage diverging from related tiger cats roughly 1.4 million years ago.
The discovery was published in the journal Current Biology.
