Florida Congressman Greg Steube is pushing legislation that would require commercial truck drivers to demonstrate English proficiency before obtaining a CDL.
Steube argues that drivers should be able to read road signs and communicate with law enforcement to help promote roadway safety. His proposal comes as the federal government increases enforcement of existing English-language proficiency requirements for commercial drivers.
Steube previously introduced the Safer Truckers Act, which would require individuals seeking a commercial driver’s license to demonstrate English proficiency.
